Why gutters matter

Gutters that keep up with the trees

On a wooded Farmington Hills lot, gutters work harder than almost anywhere else. Oak and maple leaves in the fall, seeds and flowers in the spring, and twigs after every windstorm all end up in the trough. Once a gutter or downspout clogs, water spills over the front edge, soaks the fascia, splashes against the brick and siding, and pools along the foundation, which is how many wet basements start.

Seamless gutters run in one continuous piece along each side of the house, so there are no joints along the run to open up and drip. We size the gutters and downspouts for the area and pitch of the roof above them, set the slope so water reaches the outlets, and add downspouts where a long run or a valley dumps a lot of water in one place.

Where trees hang over the house, gutter guards can cut down on how often you need to clean. We install them with the gutters and fasten everything with hidden hangers into solid fascia. And because we are roofers, we make sure the drip edge laps into the gutter so roof water lands where it should.

What we install

Gutter work for Farmington Hills homes

Everything that moves water from the roof edge to a safe spot in the yard.

Seamless gutters

One continuous run between corners, with no seams along the length to leak or pull apart.

Fewer joints, fewer drips

Downspouts & extensions

Enough downspouts for the roof area, placed so water lands well away from the foundation.

Keeps basements drier

Gutter guards

Covers that keep leaves, seeds and shingle grit out so the gutter keeps flowing between cleanings.

Cuts down on clogs

Sizing to the roof

Steep, large or valley-fed roof sections push more water; we size the gutter and outlets to match.

No overflow in downpours

Ice & snow detailing

Solid hangers, the right pitch and ice and water shield at the eaves so winter ice does less harm.

Built for freeze-thaw

Gutter repairs

Leaking corners, loose hangers and clogged or crushed downspouts fixed when the system is still worth keeping.

Repair before replace
Choosing the right setup

Gutters, guards and downspouts, side by side

Not every house needs every option. A ranch with no trees nearby may only need properly sized seamless gutters and a couple of well-placed downspouts. A two-story with oaks and maples over the roof will spend every fall clogging unless it has guards.

During the free inspection we look at the roof pitch and size, where the valleys dump water, the trees overhead and where the yard slopes, then recommend what the house actually needs. You get it in writing with photos of the problem spots, so you can compare it fairly.

If the gutters you have are the right size and still hold their pitch, we’ll say so. Sometimes a few added downspouts, longer extensions or a set of guards solve the problem without new gutters at all. And if the roof itself is near the end of its life, we’ll point that out too, because gutters are best replaced when the new drip edge goes on.

Written estimate

You get a written estimate with the gutter size, downspout locations and any guards spelled out.

Clean install

We hang the new system, test the flow and clean up the yard before we leave.

  • Pitch set to drain

Fighting ice dams?

Ice along the gutters usually starts on the roof: heat loss, ventilation and missing ice and water shield.

Gutters in Farmington Hills

Leaves in fall, ice in winter

Farmington Hills gutters deal with two seasons that are hard on them back to back.

In the fall, a heavy tree canopy fills gutters in a matter of weeks. If that debris is still there when winter arrives, it freezes in place, water can’t drain, and the gutter fills with ice that pulls on the hangers and feeds ice dams at the eaves. Snow sliding off the roof adds more weight in late winter.

In spring and summer, heavy rain from thunderstorms tests whether the downspouts are large enough and whether water is carried away from the foundation. We plan the system for all of it.

Leaf load

Guards and larger downspouts where heavy tree cover fills gutters every fall.

Foundation drainage

Downspouts placed and extended to move water away from the basement walls.

Solid hangers

Hidden hangers into sound fascia so gutters hold under ice and snow.

Roofing questions

Gutter questions from Farmington Hills homeowners

Sizing, guards and keeping water away from the house.

Are gutter guards worth it on a wooded Farmington Hills lot?
Often, yes. With big trees over the house, guards cut down on how often the gutters need cleaning and help keep them from freezing full of debris. They still need an occasional check, and we explain the options at your inspection.
Do I need a permit for new gutters in Farmington Hills?
Gutter work usually doesn’t need one, but check with the City of Farmington Hills building department if you are unsure, especially if the gutters are part of a larger roof or siding project.
What size gutters does my house need?
It depends on the roof area and pitch draining into each run, plus how many downspouts it has. We size them during the inspection rather than guessing.
Why are seamless gutters better?
There are no joints along the run, so there are fewer places to leak. The only seams are at the corners and outlets.
Can you install gutters when you replace my roof?
Yes, and it is a good time to do it. We can tie the drip edge, fascia repairs and new gutters into the roof job.
My basement gets wet after storms. Could it be the gutters?
It often is. Overflowing gutters and downspouts that drop water right at the wall are common causes. We check where the water is going and show you.
